From Childhood Dream to the Pyramids

From Childhood Dream to the Pyramids

My 7 Day Egypt Travel Guide, What to Book, and What to Know Before You Go

The 9 Year Old Who Manifested Egypt

When I was nine years old, I wrote a school report about the number one place I wanted to visit before I died.

Egypt.

Not Disney. Not Paris.

Egypt.

It felt ancient. Mysterious. So far away it almost did not feel real.

Fast forward years later, and I found myself extending a work trip to finally make that childhood dream happen.

And yes, before anyone asks, the only reason I was staying at the Four Seasons in Cairo is because my job was paying for it. Let’s be clear. I do not casually book Four Seasons on my own dime.

But stepping onto that balcony overlooking the Nile? That part felt earned.

Cairo and the Nile: History That Does Not Feel Like a Textbook

The Nile is not just scenic. It is the reason Egypt exists.

About 95% of the population lives along it. For thousands of years, it has powered agriculture, trade, and civilization.

Waking up with the Nile below me was surreal. But you do not need Four Seasons money to do that. There are plenty of riverfront hotels in Cairo at reasonable prices.

Things to Do in Cairo Egypt

The Egyptian Museum in Tahrir Square holds more than 120,000 artifacts. King Tut’s treasures alone will make you stand still longer than you expect.

The Grand Egyptian Museum near Giza is becoming the largest archaeological museum in the world dedicated to a single civilization.

If you want context beyond wandering, I recommend a guided museum tour. The storytelling transforms statues into people and timelines into lived experiences.

My recommended Guided Tour

This is when it hit me. I was not reading about Egypt anymore. I was inside it.

Where to Stay in Giza and Why It Matters

After my work week ended, I moved to Giza.

And this is where the trip shifted from impressive to personal.

I stayed at the Nine Pyramids Hotel for under $20 a night.

Yes. Under $20.

From the restaurant terrace, you can see the pyramids while drinking fresh orange juice. And I mean fresh fresh. I was obsessed with the juice.

If you are visiting the Pyramids of Giza, stay nearby. So many hotels offer direct pyramid views, and waking up to them without the daytime crowds feels sacred.

ATV Tour in Giza: Beauty, Dust, and Preparation

The desert does not care about your aesthetic.

It is dusty. Extremely dusty.

I booked my ATV tour in Giza through Viator because I trust their reviews and cancellation policies.

Super affordable ATV Tour

Riding across the desert with the pyramids rising in the background felt cinematic.

But prepare properly.

Bring:

* A desert scarf to wrap around your face (link scarf here)

* Protective sunglasses or goggles (link goggles here)

* Comfortable closed toe sneakers (link sneakers here)

* A crossbody anti theft bag (link bag here)

This is not the place to wing it.

Going Inside the Pyramid

You can go inside one of the pyramids.

And I did.

The entrance slopes upward at an angle that makes your legs question your choices. Then you enter a narrow corridor. Dark. Tight. Quiet.

Eventually you reach the chamber. Standing inside something built over 4,500 years ago with no modern machinery shifts your perspective.

I was fortunate enough to be allowed a closer look into one of the tomb areas. Access varies and preservation is critical, so always follow official guidelines.

It is not glamorous. It is not easy.

But it is unforgettable.

Tuk Tuks, Carriages, and Moving Like a Local

In Giza, I used tuk tuks like someone else might use Uber.

I also took a horse carriage ride through the pyramids for a slower pace and different vantage point.

Carry small bills. Expect negotiation. Move with confidence.

Khan El Khalili Market: Chaos and Celebrity Moments

Khan El Khalili Bazaar dates back to the 14th century.

It is loud. Layered. Alive.

Spices stacked high. Lanterns glowing. Vendors calling out.

I sat on a side street and got henna done.

And somehow I became the attraction. People wanted photos with me like I was a celebrity. It was unexpected and honestly kind of funny.

There is also an underground essential oil and perfume shop I visited that felt exclusive and hidden.

The owner explained that oils made there are exported to Europe and used in major luxury fragrances. Whether you are into perfume or not, learning that the base of something like Chanel No. 5 may begin in a place like this changes how you see the global luxury industry.

Egypt is layered like that.

Nile Riverboat Stay and Slower Evenings

I ended my trip back in Cairo in a converted riverboat hotel on the Nile.

Egypt Visa Process for US Travelers

US passport holders can obtain a visa on arrival at Cairo International Airport.

The tourist visa costs 25 USD and is valid for 30 days. Always confirm current requirements before traveling.

Bring cash. Be patient. It is straightforward.

Cultural Awareness and What to Know Before You Go

Egypt is predominantly Islamic.

Dress modestly, especially outside tourist areas. Cover shoulders and knees when possible.

There are expat neighborhoods in Cairo, but they do not reflect the full depth of Egypt. Staying in Giza gave me a more immersive experience.

Things move differently here. That is part of the experience.

Why Egypt Stays With You

The pyramids are one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.

They were built around 2560 BC without cranes, without engines, without modern tools.

Hieroglyphics are not decoration. They are languages.

Egypt does not just show you history.

It humbles you.

For the 9 year old who once dreamed of this place, it was everything.

And if Egypt is not your dream, I hope you chase whatever has lived in you that long.

Final Thoughts

Seven days in Egypt is enough to change how you see the world.

If you are planning your own Egypt travel guide, give yourself time in both Cairo and Giza.

And if you have questions while planning, reach out.

The little girl in me is still smiling.

And I hope yours gets to visit her dream place too.
